Minutes of Student Representatives’ Meeting
Marymount School
Thursday, September 24th, 2009
The Board members welcomed new and old students. Students were given a list of rules and guidelines, and a general outline for the year.
A JSA Rep must:
- -Attend monthly meetings and participate in JSA sponsored events.
- -Read and respond to minutes and e-mails.
- -Generate ideas for community service, social and cultural/athletic events; get suggestions and feedback from classmates.
- -Publicize JSA events within his/her school community through the internet, assemblies, school newspapers, class meetings, flyers etc…
- -Organize annual JSA fund-raiser within their school: bake sale, dress-down day, etc.
- -Communicate regularly with JSA Parent Reps, Divisional Head, and Faculty Advisor.
We then discussed the Schedule for Upcoming Events:
Service Saturday at Nightingale-Bamford on October 24th, 1-5 pm. Reps should start a toiletries drive to be used to make kits for shelters.
Students shared additional ideas for community service projects that included:
- Book Drives
- A “speed dating” event for friends. This would allow students from all different schools to get acquainted with one another.
- An Arts Festival to benefit public schools
We also discussed possible ideas for spreading word about JSA and upcoming JSA events. Our ideas included:
- JSA groups on Facebook
- Emailing flyers in addition to posting them in schools
- 1-2 sentences on flyers describing what JSA is
We then proceeded to discuss possible charities to donate to for the upcoming year. They include:
- Pediatrics charity at Mount Sinai
- S.W.A.N. (Something Women All Need)
The next meeting will be at Spence on October 22, 2009

Discussion of Service Saturday
Service Saturday: Saturday October 24
- Discussed Pros and Cons of Service Saturday
- Discussed suggestions for next service Saturday
- Kate Suhr from God’s Love We Deliver gave a brief presentation and thanks
Pros of Service Saturday
- Cards were a good idea: felt personal, true community service
- People seemed to enjoy making the cards
- Not much effort was involved
- Good location
Cons of Service Saturday
- Not enough people showed up
- Wasn’t enough to do
- People would make one card, then leave
- Time may have been wrong
Suggestions for Next Service Saturday
- Hopefully sometime in the spring
- Maybe a weekday afternoon (though difficult due to conflicting sports schedules)
- Instead of making cards, something more active and that requires more attention
- Could also be on a Sunday instead of a Saturday
- Could start later
- Suggestions for making the next Service Saturday more active: volunteering at a soup kitchen, Meals on Wheels, Safe Haven
- Meals on Wheels & Safe Haven have been successful in the past
Holiday Carnival
- Now scheduled for January 9, attendance of schools has changed
- Nightingale no longer able to attend, need to find a school to cover for them
- Stations have stayed the same as last year for the most part
- Hewitt no longer doing freeze dance, need new station
- Need volunteers from each school
- Need volunteer photographer
Browning Event
- February 20
- Browning gym available for event
- Decide whether or not there should be a theme
- Committee of 4-5 should start meeting ASAP to plan this event
- Try and get more students to come
- Always difficult getting attendance
- Coffeehouse?
- Battle of the Bands
- Open Mic
- All of the above have been discussed, people generally agree that it should be a music-geared event, think that this would draw more attention to it
- Will this be too much like Independent Voices? Make it less formal, more music than poetry and open mic
- If we do this, start raising awareness in our schools and seeing if people would perform or not
“FEAST” Festival of the Arts—possible Browning event
- Upcoming (spring) Arts Festival
- Dates undecided: could be the February 20 event at Browning or possibly March, if location is available
- Could plan for next fall, may be hard to work out this year
- A festival where students auction off or show their art and either people buy it or pay an entry fee
- Money goes to charity
- Still need to figure out whether the art will be auctioned or just shown
- Figure out a space, date
- New acronym
- Try and e-mail students at each school for an estimate of how many people would submit art
Next Meeting: December 10th at Columbia

December 10th, 2009
JSA welcomed guest speakers from City Year
- City Year has 240 people in New York ages 17 – 24 who work with students in 20 schools mentoring, tutoring, and being role models for 10 months of a year
- On February 20th there will be a painting project for these public schools
- City Year’s volunteers would come help with the project
- Give JSA volunteers to participate in art projects
- JSA volunteers would be modeling the type of service work that City Year volunteers already participate in
- Browning has offered space for the February 20th JSA-City Year event
Next, the Winter Carnival was discussed
- The event starts at 1pm
- By now each school should know what their booth will be
- Each school should be able to finance the supplies they will need for their booth
- The kids will be at the carnival from 2pm – 3:30pm
- There will be roughly 50 kids attending, ages 7 – 12
- Pizza will be provided for volunteers
- Each booth will need 5 – 8 volunteers at a time
- Schools should try to find volunteers who will stay through to the end
- JSA is looking for two photographers for the event
- It was suggested that maybe t-shirts be given out in the gift bags instead of candy or plastic toys
- It was also suggested that students might want to invite a member of their school’s newspaper to do a write up on the event for good JSA publicity
Other important announcements and developments
- JSA is looking for an MC for the poetry event Independent Voices on April 23, 6-8:30 pm
- JSA is looking for a student(s) with computer skills who would like to work on the online publication of the Independent Voices anthology
- Trinity was recently added to our community of JSA High Schools
The next meeting will be held January 28th at Browning
