Minutes of Student Representatives’ Meeting
Marymount School
Thursday, September 25th, 2008
The Board members welcomed new and old students. Students were given a list of rules and guidelines, and a general outline for the year.
A JSA Rep must:
- Attend monthly meetings and participate in JSA sponsored events.
- Read and respond to minutes and e-mails.
- Generate ideas for community service, social and cultural/athletic events; get suggestions and feedback from classmates.
- Publicize JSA events within his/her school community through the internet, assemblies, school newspapers, class meetings, flyers etc…
- Organize annual JSA fund-raiser within their school; bake sale, dress-down day etc.
- Communicate regularly with JSA Parent Reps, Divisional Head, and Faculty Advisor.
We then discussed the Schedule for Upcoming Events.
- Project Safe Haven
- Holiday Carnival
- Publicolor (tentative)
- Service Saturday
- Independent Voices (poetry share)
- Independent Visions
We discussed our first community service effort, Project Safe Haven.
- The event will take place on Saturday, October 25th
- Participants will meet in the cafeteria of Columbia Prep at noon.
- The purpose of this event is to enlist new stores to put up a “Safe Haven” sticker in their window, indicating to students that they may wait inside if they feel threatened on the street.
- We will be working with Westside Crime Prevention to update their program.
- Participants will receive four hours of community service.
- Participants must dress neatly.
- JSA Reps were instructed to publicize this event in their schools.
The Holiday Carnival was discussed. Each school is responsible for coming up with a booth for the carnival.
- Date: Saturday, November 8th, 2008
- Location: Christ Church
- Time: 1pm-4pm
- Each school is responsible for coming up with an idea for a booth for the carnival.
- Preliminary ideas for booths:
- Chapin: Limbo
- Sacred Heart: Cupcake making
- Spence: Basketball
- La Scuola: Face Painting and tattoos
- Browning: ?
- Hewitt: Freeze dance
- Collegiate: ?
- Marymount: Twister
- Nightingale: Bracelet making and Sumo Wrestling
- Brearley: Decorate cookies
- Reps should plan on getting a team of 5-10 volunteers from their school.
- Reps from Browning and Brearley volunteered to take photographs that day.
Students shared additional ideas for community service projects that included:
- A masquerade (possibly to be held at Sacred Heart, proceeds would go to a charity)
- Save Our Women: a clothing company (proceeds go to Breast Cancer research). Maybe students will pass out flyers to publicize the company.
- Charity athletic event (short, interschool competitions). Reps will get feedback from their schools, and at the next meeting, we will determine if there is enough interest to facilitate this event.
- The organization Gods Love We Deliver is looking for high school volunteers.
Marymount is hosting a dance on Friday, October 24 from 7:30- 10:30 pm. There is a $7.00 admission fee. Students must bring a school ID.
Next meeting: Thursday, October 30th at 4:15 at Chapin

Last few mentions of the Holiday Carnival:
• Schools should think about turning in the description of the Holiday Carnival to their school newspaper so that students can better understand what JSA does.
• Some schools think that JSA only organizes middle school dances. This is not a reputation that we want to have. By putting the Holiday Carnival write up in school newspapers we may be able to change what people think of JSA.
February 7th – Service Saturday:
Will be hosted at Columbia Prep
Discussion
which charity to give to, preferably one that is special to us in someway:
- Project Sunshine? (They help to create activities for children in hospitals to do, like arts and craft projects)
- Toiletries for soldiers? (Decided that there were too many regulations)
- Final Decision: Collect toiletries for a teenage shelter located downtown.
• How to Collect Toiletries: each school puts a drop box at their school asking for any toiletries but also, each school has a specific toiletry they are trying to collect. (Note: nothing sharp ex: razors, nail clippers)
• Schools volunteered for specific toiletries:
- Soap → Spence
- Shampoo → Columbia
- Deodorant → Browning
- La Scuola d’Italia → Toothpaste
• Toiletries not accounted for:
- Conditioner
- Hairbrush
- Tissues
- Combs
- Washcloths
- Hand creams
- Hand sanitizers
• Drop boxes should be made and placed in schools after winter break. All toiletries donated should still be in their packaging and sealed.
• Toiletries collected should be brought to the next JSA meeting so that they can be counted.
• Still going to do cards for God’s Love.
• Coloring books and crayons for Mount Sinai
• Final Decision: Three parts to Service Saturday:
- Making cards for God’s Love
- Packaging coloring books and crayons for Mount Sinai children ward.
• Flyers for Service Saturday will be sent out soon and should be hung around JSA schools.
Voices:
• Deadline for submissions: January 12th
• English teachers at JSA schools have already been informed
• This year there will be no books handed out. Instead a collection of the works will be on the JSA website as a PDF and DVDs will be available. This is to save paper and to conserve JSA funds.
• Does anyone want to design DVD cover art? Must include JSA logo.
Ways to raise money for JSA:
• Browning: charges $2 for “Dress Down Day”
• Spence: Bake sales especially where they sell hot chocolate.
• La Scuola d’Italia: Bake sales
• Columbia Prep: custom colored doughnuts from Dunkin Doughnuts.
• Raffles:
- iTunes gift cards
- Restaurant gift cards. Especially your schools local deli etc
• Teacher vs. Student basketball games and charge for admission
• JSA would like to keep a list of fundraisers that work.
Visions:
• How would students feel about selling their art? The money would go to JSA.
- Maybe some can be for sale but not all, depending on the students’ preferences?
- Need to check with the schools.
• All the pictures have to be a standard size.
• No date set yet but will be sometime in April.
Extras:
• Publicolor → sometime during the last two weeks of January
• Would JSA like to adopt a family?
- A charity in which a person (or in our case an organization) provides things to a family anywhere across America that is struggling.
• Maybe for the next holiday season JSA can organize to answer some letters to Santa that arrive in the thousands at the post office.

The Spence School
Independent Voices – Saturday, April 3rd
- About 15 members schools participated
- Feedback and suggestions:
- Faculty from other schools enjoyed meeting each other – introduce a pre-event reception next year.
- Faculty preferred the printed booklet of poems. JSA may self-publish the booklet next year.
Publicolor – Saturday, April 25th
- Representatives should advertise Publicolor at their schools via posting the flyer, announcements etc.
- One rep from each school should collect sign-ups and then email Sarah Barish smb1015@aol.com a list of volunteers by Wednesday, April 22nd
Independent Visions – Saturday, May 2nd – Sunday, May 3rd
- At the opening a professional photographer will speak about different career opportunities within photography
- There will be refreshments and music.
- Students from almost every school have submitted work for this event
School Events
- Chapin is hosting a battle of the bands called “Night of Noise” this Friday, April 17th from 6:30-9pm. Admission is $5.
Other
- Contemplating possible name change next year – Upper School JSA is often confused with Middle School Joint Schools, the organization that promotes charity dances for middle schoolers. We may ask them to change their name.
- Discussion about social events such as speed dating.
